Police release Madeleine suspect description

A friend of Madeleine McCann's parents may have seen her being carried away from her holiday apartment on the night she vanished, as police release the description of a man they want to trace.

A "witness" reported seeing a man carrying "an object that could have been ... a child" in the Algarve village of Praia Da Luz at 9.30pm on May 3 - while Madeleine's parents were finishing dinner nearby. A source indicated that the sighting - the most striking so far in the case - was made by one of the couple's party who has not been named.

Policia Judiciaria (PJ) finally released a description of the man seen that night in the face of possible legal action by Madeleine's parents. The information, likely to have been released early on as a matter of course in other countries, had to be sanctioned by the public prosecutor.
It followed an "amicable" meeting with senior Portuguese police and the McCanns believed to have taken place on Thursday. The couple also had discussions with British Ambassador John Buck and UK police at their apartment on Thursday.

The PJ has been heavily criticised in the British media over the past three weeks for not releasing more details of suspicious sightings in the face of the country's strict "secrecy of justice" laws which forbid the disclosure of information about an investigation.

It is thought the PJ have known about the sighting for three weeks but have not released it for that reason.

The description - which tallies closely to details being circulated at the time but never publicised - is of a white man, approximately 35 to 40 years old, of medium build and 5ft 10ins tall. He was described as wearing a dark jacket, light beige trousers and dark shoes.

Officers toured shops and bars in the village with a basic description in the days after Madeleine was snatched as well as one or more images of the man. But facial features were scant and one man described an e-fit he was shown by plain clothes officers as like "an egg with hair".

The announcement was welcomed as an apparent "new development" in the case by the McCanns. The couple spoke earlier of hopes that police would make an announcement soon to take the case forward.

A spokesman for the couple confirmed: "Gerry and Kate McCann are pleased to hear about what appears to be a new development. They will now be considering what the police have said before making any further comment. They are acutely aware that this is an ongoing investigation."

Meanwhile, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued new photographs of the four-year-old. The holiday snaps, taken by a friend of the family the day before her disappearance, show Madeleine McCann at play wearing a pink zip-up top.

Madeleine: 'The Guilt Will Never Leave Us'

Gerry and Kate Talk To Sky News

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have given their first interview about their ongoing ordeal. Gerry and Kate McCann spoke to Sky's Ian Woods in the Portuguese holiday resort of Praia da Luz, where their daughter vanished 22 days ago.

The parents of Madeleine McCann have given an insight into the family's nightmare since the abduction of their daughter.

Gerry and Kate McCann have told Sky News about their guilt at leaving Madeleine and her twin brother and sister alone in their bedroom, about the police investigation and about the support they've received from people around the world.

Kate told Sky's Ian Woods of the moment three weeks ago when she found Madeleine had vanished.

"We were checking regularly on the children and it was during one of my checks that I discovered she was gone.

"I can't really go into any details about that. I'm sure any parent will realise how that felt." The panic set in "pretty much immediately", she said..

They explained why their three children were left alone while they had a meal nearby.
Gerry said: "I think If you know the location here - what we did we've been assured by the thousands of messages from people who've either done exactly the same or would have done the same.

"For us it really wasn't very much different from having dinner in your garden, in the proximity of the location.

"I think it's fair to say that the guilt that we feel, having not been there at that moment - irrespective of whether we had been in the other bedroom or not - will never leave us."
Kate said they blamed themselves for the disappearance in the early stages.

"Certainly in the first few days the guilt was very difficult. I think as time goes on we feel stronger and we've felt very supported.

Gerry: "We've tried to rationalise things in our head. Ultimately what is done is done. and we do continually look forwarded.

"We've tried to put things into perspective for ourselves:

"It's a very safe resort. If you think about the millions and millions of British families who go to the Mediterranean each year, really the chances of this happening are in the order of 100-million-to-one."

Kate said: "At worst we were naive. We are very responsible parents. We love our children very much. And I don't think that any parent could ever imagine or consider anything like this happening."

The couple said they had been aware of the big public debate which followed the abduction and admitted they were hurt by it.

But Gerry said: "No one hurts you as much as the hurt we had. We've tried to remain very positive in our outlook, and even small levels of criticism make that hard when you are trying to do everything in your power to get your daughter back.

Of the police investigation, Gerry said: "I don't think it helps to look back at what could and couldn't have been done.

"I think it's fair to say that we expected a very British-style response that you would expect if you were in a big metropolitan city.

"But you have to put that in context - we're in a tiny resort. But that aside, the time for the lessons to be learned will be after the investigation has finished and not now.

Gerry said it was a huge investigation and there are hundreds of pieces of information continuing to come forward.

He asked that any holidaymakers who were in the Algarve in the two weeks before Madeleine disappeared to send in their photos, using the website www.madeleine.ceopupload.com
Anyone with information can still call the following numbers:

From the UK 0800 096 1233. From Abroad 0044 207 158 0197

"We want Madeleine back and people can still influence that," said Gerry, a hospital consultant.
The McCanns said they had seen nothing suspicious in the days before Madeleine's disappearance.

"It had been such a relaxing holiday up to that point - as good a holiday as we ever had," said Gerry.

The couple said they still believe Madeleine will be found safe and well but admitted to having had negative thoughts in the early days.

Kate said: "We're actually a lot stronger, a lot more hopeful now. And we have to be hopeful - it's what keeps us focussed."

Kate said the twins, two-year-olds Sean and Amelie, were of an age where the disappearance had not had such an impact on them.

"They do talk about Madeleine - pick up things and say "Madeleine's". They're really good."
Gerry said: "Many people have said to us this is a parent's worst nightmare, and it is - it truly is and it's as bad as you could possibly imagine. But if all three of the children had been taken it could have been even worse than your worst nightmare.

"And we've got to be strong for them. They are here. They bring you back to earth."

Kate said she couldn't think about going home without Madeleine.

She spoke of the comfort she gets from Madeleine's 'Cuddle Cat' toy she carries.
Gerry explained why he thought the story had attracted so much worldwide attention.

"The world has changed in terms of information technology and the speed of response, you know in terms of the media coming here and us being prepared to some extent use that to try and influence the campaign.

"But above all else it's touched everyone. Everyone. You don't have to be a parent for this to have a major impact on you."

The couple recognised that the level of media coverage will not last forever but said they had sensed a feeling that people would not allow something like this to happen again.

McCanns speak of feelings of guilt

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have spoken of their feelings of guilt at not being there when she was taken.

In their first interview Kate and Gerry McCann spoke about the "darkness" they felt in the first hours and days after their daughter's abduction. The couple told how they had made arrangements with other families to regularly check on their children on the night of May 3 while dining a short distance away.

Gerry McCann compared eating in the tapas bar at the Ocean Club Resort in Praia da Luz as like "having dinner in your garden". But he said: "I think it's fair to say that the guilt that we feel having not been there at that moment, irrespective of whether we had been in the next bedroom or not, will never leave us."

His wife Kate said: "Certainly the first few days I think the guilt was very difficult but I think as time goes on you feel stronger and you feel very supported."

Mrs McCann insisted the couple were not irresponsible parents but said they had perhaps been naive.

She said: "I think we were naive, we are very responsible parents, we love our children very much. I don't think any parent could imagine or consider anything like this happening."
Mr McCann said the experience of his daughter's abduction was "worse than your worst nightmare" but said that they had drawn strength from thousands of messages of support from around the world.

They also described how they have been dealing with Madeleine's abduction in the presence of their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

Mr McCann said: "We have said she's gone on a little trip just now and Amelie came out with one really cutting line that went right to the core, she said 'Madeleine's on trip, back soon'.

"We certainly pray for that every day."

McCanns' vow on Missing Children's Day

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have vowed not to lose hope as International Missing Children's Day is marked around the world.

Madeleine, four, will be the focus of many international events more than three weeks after she was snatched from her parents' holiday apartment in Praia Da Luz on the Algarve, Portugal.

In a message carried in the Portuguese press, Gerry and Kate McCann identified with parents of missing children in all countries.

"We, like parents of missing children around the world, will not lose hope," they said.
In Britain, Mr McCann's brother John will visit the London head office of the National Missing Persons Helpline to highlight its work.

Last night Madeleine's image was projected on Marble Arch in London as part of the appeal for information on her whereabouts.

Today she will be the focus of events across Europe, including in Portugal, where her mother Kate is expected to attend a private lunch with a children's charity.

International Missing Children's Day originates from the disappearance on May 25, 1979, of six-year-old Etan Patz in New York.

Over subsequent years his case was kept in the public eye by various organisations and in 1983 US President Ronald Reagan declared May 25 "Missing Children's Day" in America.

The tradition spread to Canada three years later and has since been adopted around the world including the European Union.

Two quizzed over missing Madeleine

Detectives in Portugal have questioned two people over the disappearance of British youngster Madeleine McCann.

Police in Portimao re-interviewed a man and a woman, one Portuguese, one foreign.

They are believed to be Michaela Walczuch, the German lover of Robert Murat - the only official "suspect" in the case so far - and her estranged husband Luis Antonio, who were both questioned before on the night Mr Murat's house was searched by police.

Mr Murat has not been charged or even formally arrested but remains the police's main line of inquiry in the case. He strenuously denies any involvement in Madeleine's abduction.

Madeleine was snatched from her bed as her parents ate dinner on May 3 in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz.

Her parents have made a personal pilgrimage to pray for a miracle.

Holding presents, flowers and a single set of Rosary beads, Gerry and Kate McCann sat among more than 1,000 pilgrims praying for her safe return at Portugal's holiest site.

The couple fulfilled a long-standing ambition to visit the Marian shrine of Fatima, north of Lisbon, which has become a focus of prayers for four-year-old Madeleine.

Her parents, who are making preparations to personally travel around Europe to appeal for help, set off from Praia da Luz early in the morning for the four-hour drive to Fatima.

The shrine is the site of a series of visions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children, including two young girls, in 1917.

Madeleine's father to fly home

The father of missing Madeleine McCann is set to fly to the UK to make arrangements for the international campaign to find his daughter.

Gerry McCann is expected to spend just over 24 hours away from his wife Kate and twin children Sean and Amelie in the family's first time apart since Madeleine's abduction.

Mr McCann is making the visit to deal with "personal matters" as well as to meet organisers of the Find Madeleine fund.

Mrs McCann will remain at the family's temporary holiday apartment in Praia da Luz where they continue to wait for news of the four-year-old who was snatched from her bed 17 days ago.

Mr McCann is expected to be back by his wife's side on Tuesday morning.

A spokeswoman for the family in Portugal said: "He will be talking to the people who are organising the fund."

Although it will be the first time the couple, who have repeatedly stood together hand in hand appealing for their daughter's return, have been separated since the abduction the spokeswoman emphasised that Mr McCann was returning to Britain to do "positive" things.

She said: "He's very focussed, he is going out there for very practical reasons and he's going to get back here as quickly as he can."

It is thought that the visit would enable the couple to set matters in order to enable them to stay in Portugal for the foreseeable future while they wait for Madeleine's return.

Last week Mrs McCann said that she "couldn't even consider" leaving Portugal at present.

Earleir, new photographs of Kate and Gerry McCann have showed how they are trying to maintain a sense of normality while the search for their four-year-old daughter goes on.

The family is seen smiling as they eat lunch, read books play with their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

Kate McCann is seen wearing yellow and green ribbons in her hair as a sign of hope for daughter Madeleine's safe return, while Gerry McCann wears yellow and green wristbands.

A spokesman said the family was drawing strength for the enormous support shown from across the world - including over 94 million hits on a special website created to help find the girl, while a video appealing for help was shown to 90,000 fans at Saturday's FA Cup final.
